big thompson river
(current flow rate/ below Lake Estes, current weather/Estes Park)

The Big Thompson River below Lake Estes provides tremendous fly fishing opportunities for both wild brown and rainbow trout. Though the average fish is around 12 inches, there are some bigger fish, but the pure beauty of the trout that inhabit this river is enough to overcome the size of your average catch. The Big T has prolific hatches of midges, blue wing olives, caddis, PMD's and golden stones provding excellent fishing year round and with a staggering 3,900 fish per mile you are sure to get into some trout. The fly angler has several different types of water to fish from riffles to pocket water to big bend pools making this a fly fisherman's paradise.

Flows are low and slow on the Big T right now but that doesn't mean the fish are eating. Be as stealthy as possible and throw your flies only to feeding fish and you'll get your fair share of fish. Looking for that local fly or the local lowdown? Give the folks at Kirk's Fly Shop a call and tell them we sent you. Crowds and can get heavy on the weekends so we recommend hitting this Colorado classic on a weekday to help avoid bumping elbows with your neighbor.

Current recommended flies: #16-#18 red copper john, #14-#18 psycho prince, #6 Pat's rubber legs, #18-#22 top secret midge, #18-#24 jujbee midge, #18-#22 blue poison tung, #18-#24 blood midge, #18-#22 micro midge, #20-#24 black beauty, #18 red two bit hooker, #18-#20 pheasant tail, #18-#22 RS II, #16-#20 rainbow warrior.
